Stockport High School — Making Way for Better Facilities
Quantum Group is delivering a live, specialist civil engineering package at Stockport High School, designing and installing a complete new drainage system to connect forthcoming toilet facilities to the external mains. This project combines careful structural dismantling, precision excavation and engineered drainage installation — all carried out with our own plant, experienced crews and a constant focus on protecting the school environment and keeping the programme moving.
Project overview — what we’re doing and why it matters
What does a modern drainage build involve? Far more than digging a hole. We’re creating a fully engineered drainage solution that starts at the future toilet locations inside the building, runs through three main internal trenches, continues via core‑drilled openings to an external trench and finally ties into the mains connection outside. The work ensures reliable foul and soil removal for new sanitary facilities, protects the building fabric from moisture and secures long‑term maintainability for the school.
Inside works — precision deconstruction and trench formation
How do you excavate deep service trenches through a finished structural floor without destabilising the building? Our teams began with a targeted dismantling and deconstruction phase: concrete break‑out using a combination of controlled mechanical breakers and carefully supervised hand‑digging where precision was critical. Three primary internal trenches were formed to exact levels and falls required for gravity drainage — taking into account invert levels, pipe diameters and future inspection chamber positions. Temporary supports, edge protection and dust suppression were implemented throughout to protect existing finishes and ensure safe access for school users and site personnel.
Core drilling and routing — creating the path to the outside
How do you safely transition pipework from inside to out? After internal trenches were prepared, we executed precision core holes through slab and wall elements at pre‑agreed positions, creating sealed, waterproof passages for the piping. Each core was formed to structural engineer guidance, with temporary propping or local reinstatement where required. From these cores, we established the external line by excavating a trench to carry the drainage runs across the courtyard to the mains connection point.

Plant, methods and manpower — the right tools for the job
What makes this work efficient and reliable? The right plant operated by experienced crews. We mobilised excavators for bulk removal, dumpers for debris management, and specialist breakers and hand tools for delicate internal work. Machine control, depth checks and laser levels ensured consistent falls and accurate invert depths. We combined mechanical capability with skilled hand excavation to protect buried services, manage working depths and avoid damaging existing structural elements. Our teams worked in zones with clear protection measures to keep the school operational.
