Kromachem — Preparing History for a Modern Workplace
Quantum Group is currently delivering a carefully staged demolition and strip‑out package at Kromachem to prepare the building for a full office refurbishment. This live programme combines robust, efficient soft strip and heavy deconstruction with delicate heritage preservation — all executed to protect historic fabric while clearing the way for a contemporary fit‑out.
Soft Strip Out
Where do you begin when a building hides decades of interventions? Our soft strip started by exposing the fabric in a controlled, auditable way. Upstairs, four large rooms were stripped of floor tiles, ceiling tiles and grid systems, and all visible plumbing and electrical containment was decommissioned and removed back to agreed tie-in points. Downstairs, three substantial basement rooms received the same treatment, alongside the removal of old lathe and plaster ceilings where required.
Heritage strip out — how do you remove without destroying character?
Not all demolition is the same. In the basement rooms we’ve carried out a heritage strip to carefully preserve original coving and a striking arch brick ceiling — architectural features that define the building’s character. How do you remove finishes but keep these intact? By planning for preservation from day one.

Pre‑works surveys and photographic records identify fixings, mortar details and any existing repairs.

Specialist conservation methods are used to remove surrounding finishes (plasterboard, loose render and fixtures) using hand tools and low‑impact techniques to avoid vibration damage.

Temporary propping and protection — bespoke timber frames, load‑spreading pads and breathable protective membranes — are installed to shield the coving and the brick arch during adjacent works.

Salvage and storage: any loose sections, mouldings or decorative fragments are recorded, labelled and stored in climate‑appropriate packing to allow for reinstatement or specialist repair later.
